The Rules in Florida

🚤 Florida boating rules: The basics

  1. Boating safety equipment: Carry the required, Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone aboard. Children under age 6 generally must wear a life jacket while underway on boats under 26 feet, subject to statutory exceptions.

  2. Boating under the influence (BUI): Operating a boat while impaired by alcohol or drugs is illegal. Florida's legal threshold is generally a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08%.

  3. Speed limits: Obey posted speed limits, manatee zones, slow-speed zones, and no-wake zones.

  4. Navigation lights: Use the required lights at night and during periods of restricted visibility.

  5. Right of way: Know when to give way to other boats, sailboats, and vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver.

  6. Personal watercraft (Jet Skis): Special age, safety, and operating restrictions apply.

  7. Boating licenses and education: Florida requires certain operators to carry boating-safety education credentials, depending on their age and circumstances.

  8. Safe operation: Maintain a proper lookout, travel at a safe speed, and avoid reckless operation.

  • No-wake zones: In an idle-speed, no-wake zone, travel at the minimum speed needed to maintain steering and forward movement.

  • Manatee zones: Follow posted speed restrictions, especially in canals and near shorelines.

  • Canal navigation: Stay alert for narrow channels, docks, swimmers, kayaks, and boats entering from side canals.

  • Anchoring and mooring: Cape Coral has local restrictions on where boats may be anchored or moored in its waterways.

  • Night boating: Make sure your navigation lights are working and use the required lights after sunset.

  • Avoid shallow areas: Follow marked channels and avoid running through seagrass beds.
